Tally envisioned a transformation in financial literacy across the MENA region through the engaging power of gamification. They needed a mobile platform that could turn dry financial education into an interactive, enjoyable experience while delivering measurable improvement in financial decision-making.
The challenge
In a crowded financial literacy market dominated by static budgeting tools and generic educational content, meaningful engagement remains elusive for most users.
Tally needed more than another educational app — they needed a transformative approach that could overcome the inherent resistance to financial topics. Existing solutions either focused solely on passive content consumption or relied on simplistic gamification elements that failed to drive sustained behavioral change and skill development.
The platform required an ecosystem where learning was experiential, progression was meaningful, and engagement mechanics aligned directly with financial literacy outcomes — all while adapting to varying knowledge levels and maintaining a cohesive educational framework.
The solution
We designed a comprehensive gamified platform where users embark on financial literacy journeys through an interactive map interface. Our solution balances immediate rewards with long-term skill development through narrative-driven learning experiences.
The ecosystem revolves around a city map metaphor where financial domains become explorable locations, each containing journeys and stations that deliver educational content through diverse interactive templates. Users build skills, earn achievements, and track progress while experiencing financial concepts in relatable scenarios with real-world applications.
By transforming financial education from passive consumption to active participation, we created multiple engagement loops that maintain interest while systematically building financial competencies that translate to improved decision-making.
Our approach
We crafted Tally's platform through a structured process that merged behavioral science with educational design:
Gamification Framework Implementation — Using the Octalysis model, we engineered a balanced system addressing both extrinsic motivation (badges, points, leaderboards) and intrinsic drivers (mastery, meaning, ownership) to create sustainable engagement.
Progressive Learning Architecture — We structured content into interconnected locations, journeys, skill wells, and stations that adapt to user progress, ensuring appropriate challenge levels while maintaining narrative coherence.
Behavioral Engagement Systems — We designed streaks, challenges, and achievement mechanics calibrated to reinforce daily engagement and positive financial behaviors, transitioning users from external rewards to intrinsic habit formation.
Economy Simulation — Through detailed progression modeling, we balanced XP acquisition rates, learning curve difficulty, and reward schedules to maintain user motivation throughout the entire educational journey.
Adaptive Content Delivery — We developed fourteen distinct interactive templates for content presentation, allowing the same financial concepts to be delivered through varied engagement modes based on learning preferences and context.
